Because he was my friend. [ Hermione grips the ring, expression tight and tense.
Her relationship with Gilgamesh is almost impossible to describe and explain, but she feels the weight of it on her chest all the same. ]
He was something called a Heroic Spirit - he needed a Master to survive, and he chose my friend Dorian. At first, I thought the same as you, that he was a complete prat, but... He'd never had a friend before. He'd always been alone, and he was good and kind to me. I was trying to help him become a better person, someone that I knew he could be. Sometimes I thought it was working, too.
[Maybe he said it wrong or too harshly, but he wound't apologize when he still sat unconvinced.
But he did understand what it meant to have a friend that wasn't used to the notion. And while a certain parallel could be made for Hermione and her friend's proposal and what Justice and Anders did, at least they could say it was for mutual benefit and survival and not for...whatever Gilgamesh's plan had been. It sounded sort of like if Anders had asked Justice to join with him purely to use his power to free and save Karl.]
I can understand that, I really can, but it does still sound as though he was simply using you, well-intention-ed or otherwise.
I think he was, at first. There's no way I can deny that, so I won't - it wouldn't be doing myself justice. I rejected him and I told him that I didn't want to hear any more about it unless he truly wanted to be my friend, so... I think in the end he did.
[ Fingers fumbling with the necklace, she offers it out for Anders to take. ]
I cared about him, and he grew so much over the few years we knew each other. I just... I know I need to move forward.
Anders! [She's got a burning need to share what she's learned about Justice.] Well, before I get into it, are you talking to Justice? I swear, I'm not asking just to nag, there's a reason for this. [Though she wants an update, too.]
[Good! Now she can gush about what she's learned.]
I'm glad and relieved to hear that. But the reason I ask specifically, besides being an insufferably nosy person, is that I learned about something Justice did. Going out on a limb here and assuming he didn't tell you, since he found it odd why I wanted to know.
[Her grin widens. Ordinarily, she would feel like this should come from Justice, but she very much doubts he'd think to tell Anders.]
He kissed a woman! Properly and everything. Apparently got a little frisky with her, too.
[He was maybe going to say something before, but it flew out of his head with that one.]
Justice...kissed someone? Kissed someone and got handsy?
[What the ever living fuck? He knew Justice wasn't some child, knew he knew about love an intimacy, between Aura and even his time with Anders through Kirkwall, though this Justice hadn't gone through that yet.
But also...he definitely expected Justice to figure out what stubbing his toe felt like before making out with anyone. Anyone...]
It's true. And Justice can't lie to save his life.
[Having a friend that can't lie always makes things easier. ]
Leilani. [And such is the one who told her about the kiss. Naturally she then went and got more details out of Justice. ] We did make him ridiculously attractive. I suppose it was only a matter of time. But yes. He discovered the joy of kissing. And how nice breasts are.

[His head's spinning. He might just faint. Their little boy's all grown up and getting physical with important political figures; exactly the opposite of what he should probably do. Anders is so proud.]
Of course we did, it was to plan, just maybe not so quickly to plan.
[He seems to think a moment but then shrugs.]
She seems nice enough and she's likely had experience dealing with Cole, so it's not like she doesn't know what she's getting into.
And if there's anything his education was lacking, it was the joys of kissing and breasts; breasts are very nice.
Almost worked a little too well, huh? [Now it's time to scramble and impart information about mortal romance and love and all that jazz. Justice has to be familiar with the act of sex. The basics, at least, if not the nuances.]
She seems well aware. Enough that she was a little miffed by my questioning her about what was going on, but I'd rather be overly cautious and risk offending her a bit than the opposite and risk Justice getting hurt. [Leilani's fine now, so it wasn't a lasting wound. Just a temporary scuff on the pride.]
Not too much. Leilani stopped things before they got too far, which I'm glad. And he and I got into a discussion about why mortals might feel a little deflated if you have no reaction to seeing them naked.
Oh good, I'm glad you took care of that part first, I was dreading the thought I might have to. [He probably wouldn't have been as deleicate with it as Riona had likely been.
Luckily, neither of them are there right now, because Anders laughs. It was that horrible sort of funny that you knew you were having at another's expense...but also wasn't all that sorry for.]
Yes, I can imagine they were both a little...confused. [He gives her a shit-eating grin.] Never thought we'd be parenting a child together, but here we are. How are you holding up on those types of talks? Personally, I have zero issue telling him everything he needs to know on how to pleasure a woman.
[Remember how Anders was a lech when you met him, Riona? He's still a lech.]
[It really is like parenting and raising a child together, in a weird, completely ridiculous way. The world's biggest, most mature, but in some ways most clueless not-child. She snorts as he laughs, because yes it's kind of awful and insulting but honestly, with some of the crap they have to explain to him, they've earned a right to laugh. In private.]
Here we are, indeed. Feels like yesterday he was just learning how to talk to people. And now he's kissing women. [Wistful sigh.] As for the talks, well, I can impart some knowledge to him but some of it might come better from a man's perspective. [There's a little laugh; she remembers those days well, and she has no doubt he's got a lot to impart.] Especially in regards to his, ah, manhood. I won't be much help with that.
[Aang remembers this man from the Games. He healed the woman with pointed ears from District 10--Tabris--when she was struck by lightning during the arena where they were all punished for their power.
Aang knows that this one knows how to heal and has been at it for a long time, and it's gotten to the point where he's started thinking that maybe he should try to get better at being a medical officer. Regardless of how or why he's here, it looks like he might be here for the long haul.
So when he pops his head into the Tourist's medical bay, he waves a little as an introduction, though he's still too wary to actually come close to the healer.]
I'm supposed to be the medical officer on Red Fish. My name is Aang.
[Aang walks fully into the infirmary, waving his arms to gesture to himself, figuring that the man will probably notice how young he is.]
I only know basic healing. I was wondering if you'd let me watch you work so I could get better. Please? [He gives his best winning smile. He's good company, promise!]
[He definitely notices, but he can't figure Aang is any younger than he was when he first started learning how to become a healer. The fact he was stuck on a ship and forced to be the medical officer, however, was a little different and he certainly felt those latent desires to teach rearing up. They didn't happen often, he never thought of himself as a teacher by any means, but they were known to happen. His smile widens and he nods.]
Of course. I wouldn't mind the company and I'd be more than happy to let you help as well; I think the best way to learn is to do it first hand.
How long have you been here? Not very long, I have to assume.
[Justice is in pain and he doesn't know how to make it stop. Pain is a dangerous thing. He doesn't know what to do with it, how he should respond, if he should respond at all beyond forgetting...
So guess where he goes when he doesn't know what to do?
Justice is holding Loyalty, who's determinedly purring as she rubs her head against his chin, as he barges right into Anders' clinic without preamble, looking the absolute picture of misery.]
No, I've been here for a month and a half or so. Maybe two months by now. [Aang points at the ceiling.] I was hiding in the ventilation for a while.
[If he knows how messed up that sounds, he doesn't acknowledge it. Instead, he waltzes around the clinic, observing all the little bits and bobs that have been laid out with genuine curiosity, though he still avoids getting too close to Anders.]
Well, you can consider me here and reporting for duty, Mr. Healer sir! What should I do first?
[Justice barging in isn't much of a surprise these days, but the first thing he sees is Loyalty, who Justice doesn't tend to just carry around without reason, and his first thought is maybe something to do with the cat- until he sees his friend's face.
The mage moves quickly away from the counter he'd been working at and moves to put a hand on Justice's arm, motioning for them to sit on one of the beds with his free hand.]
[Okay, there's no way he's going to be able to smother that look of concerned confusion. Why in the Void would anyone choose to go into the ventilation? Nevermind the fact the thought of that oppressively dark and enclosed space sent chills down his spine, what would the point be? To sneak? To hide? Anders would rather face whatever might be hunting him, even if it was another Broodmother.]
Okay...I assume you...found it safe? Are you still hiding there more often than not or have you decided to surface?
[He's just got to parse this out first, then he'll think about the rest.]
[It’s not quiet an answer, and Aang knows it. The truth is that he still retreats to the vents sometimes when he’s stressed, because he knows most adults can’t follow him there. But he’s at least now turning more often to the top of refrigerators instead of the vents.]
It feels safe, I guess. Most people here are too big to get in them. And no one can crawl through them quietly as me, so I always know if someone’s coming.
It's your call what you do, it just seems...unpleasant to me.
[Downright terrifying, but that didn't even have a chance of leaving his head with someone he'd just met.]
Meanwhile, what would you like to learn first? I can put aside what I've got and we can start with whatever interests you most or you feel like you need the most help with.
[Aang it relieved to not talk about the vents and why he might want to live in them. On some level he knows it’s not healthy, but he’s rather be unhealthy and safe than otherwise.]
Do your patients need you mostly because they get sick or because they get hurt?
[He gave a small chuckle that held as mix of exasperation and affection and dug out the practice kit he'd used to show Justice how to tend to various kinds of wounds.]
With this crew? Injury for certain. Sickness happens on occasion, but very rarely. Generally, I can rely on my magic for anything that comes up. For you, the best thing to start with would likely be in case of injury while we're on a planet and away from your clinic.
