Picture references! Generally, Anders is very tall and conventionally handsome, though in that 'used to take care of himself better' way. He usually has deep under-eye circles and some malnourishment, though he still has musculature from swinging his staff around as a weapon. His eyes are an amber-brown, and his hair is blond. He has old whip scars all along his back and some working scars on his hands, though the most noticeable scar from the front is the large stab-wound scar right over his heart.

Short version is: magic presented itself when he was 13, whereupon his father sold him out to the magic cops who took him to mage-school/prison. Mages are systematically abused, controlled, raped, murdered, or lobotomized. He spent a lot of time trying to escape, and the only reason they didn't kill him for it was because he was a powerful healer, a rare skill in mages. He finally escaped for the last time in his late twenties and half-accidentally joined the Grey Wardens, a special monster-hunting group. That was great until the politics of anti-mage sentiment found him, and he was forced to run again. Unfortunately, that resulted in his near-death, so a spirit of justice who was his friend possessed him to save his life. This was ultimately not great for either of them, as Anders couldn't resist his anger at injustices anymore, and justice was slowly being turned into a spirit of vengeance. The situation for them got steadily worse while they were in Kirkwall, where the systemic abuse against mages is measurably worse, and eventually led Anders/Justice to blow up the Chantry in Kirkwall to try and force the issue and make it one people couldn't ignore anymore.
